This amazing journey will take you to some of Tanzania's most beautiful and exciting places. After a night in the lively Dar Es Salaam, you'll fly to Africa's largest wilderness; Selous. In Selouse you'll explore the wildlife in a safari jeep, on a boat in Rufiji river and on foot. Afterwards your going to fly to Zanzibar's medieval capital Stone Town. This old town, filled with narrow streets is a  fascinating place with markets, bazaars, cafes and restaurants. You'll end your trip at the wonderful Fumba Beach Lodge.

Selous Game Reserve is Africa's largest wilderness area. With its 53 000 square kilometers it covers an area equivalent to Switzerland in size. The area is almost twice as large as the so-called Greater Serengeti (the Serengeti along with neighboring reserves, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Grumeti, Maswa, Ikoma, Loliondo and Masai Mara in Kenya). Here you'll stay at Selous Wilderness Camp, a really good tented camp situated on the beautiful south side of the Rufiji river. The fact that it's conveniently located in an area where no other lodge are situated directly next to it really adds a sense of being close to nature.

Beds, bathroom, food and service are all of top quality, although it's only tent sheet which separates you from the wilderness.

What to bring on your Safari

To make your safari as pleasurable as possible we put together a checklist of things you should consider to include in your luggage.

Soft Luggage; Pack your belongings in soft bags so they easily fit into the limited space in the safari jeep. Note that the domestic flights to Zanzibar only allows one bag per person. .

Binoculars; Many animals will be close to the car but it's good to bring a binocular if we happen to see a leopard or rhino in the distance.

Flashlight or headlamp; It gets very dark at night in the African wilderness, so bringing a flashlight or preferably a headlamp is recommended.

Wipes or/and Hand Sanitizer; Useful if you want to clean your hands before a meal. Can also be used to clean any grazes etc

Hiking shoes (low): Hiking shoes are the absolute best to have on your feet whilst on safari, not only for your own comfort but also to protect your feet from any nasties on the ground such as scorpions, sharp rocks or acacia thorns. A lot of camping and hiking stores will recommend Gore-Tex shoes which are waterproof however you will want to make sure that whatever shoes you bring will be breathable as it can get quite hot. The absolute best is if you have comfortable walking shoes that are water resistant.

Sandals or Sneakers. It's nice to have a pair of comfortable well-worn shoes to wear at the lodge in the evening.

Hat or Cap; To protect you head from the sun

Sunglasses; The sun is extremely strong in East Africa so it's important to protect your eyes.

Mosquito repellent

Sunscreen; Bring plenty of sunscreen with a high SPF. If you’re travelling during the European autumn/winter it's especially important to wear a sunscreen with high SPF in the beginning. Bring as much as you will need since it's difficult to find in East Africa and where it's available it tends to be expensive.

Light Clothes; bring thin t-shirt and trousers/shorts.  Functional materials are more comfortable than cotton. In some areas, such as the Ngorongoro crater you will experience chilly night (especially between May and September), so we recommend you to bring a light jacket or fleece.

Small backpack or bag to carry camera and similar things during the day

IMPORTANT!! Before your trip make sure to visit a vaccination clinic and get the vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis you need!

Prior to your trip

Before your departure you might want to go through our checklist below to make sure you have everything you need.

Visa, If you choose to apply for your visa before your departure it should be done through their respective embassy. We recommend that you apply at lest a month in advance. There is also the possibility to buy your visa upon arrival. Make sure you have the correct amount (in USD) easily accessible in your hand luggage.

Visa to Tanzania, you can apply for a visa through the Tanzania High Commission for £40 and upon arrival in Tanzania the price is USD 50. There tends to be long queues for visa applications at arrivals. We therefor suggest that you apply for you visa at lest a month before departure. Download the application form *here*. Note that your passport has to be valid for a minimum of six months after your return flight and you passport can't be damaged in anyway. If you apply for a visa at arrivals in Tanzania you will have to be able to show your return flight.

Vaccinations, Visits you vaccination clinic well in advance to receive the vaccinations and any medications you might need. Bring your proof of vaccination to your destination.

Travel Currency, It's best to have USD in cash. Visa cards are also good, Mastercards are accepted fairly often but Amex amd Diners club are rarely accepted. Note that in many places in East Africa there is a fee up to 5% on card transactions.

Ticket; Usually you will receive an e-ticket on your email. Print your ticket and bring it to the airport for check-in. Make sure to check your flight ticket before your journey. You can do this by using your surname and booking reference to log in to checkmytrip.com. (This does not apply for group bookings) If you cant access you booking for any reason feel free to contact us and we will assist you.

Luggage: If your going on safari, please use soft sided luggage. Hard suitcases will be difficult to fit into your safari jeep.

Baggage Allowance; This varies between the different airline. Check with each airline website for their current conditions. Most domestic flights in East Africa only allow one bag with a limit of 20kg/person. Smaller safari planes often only allow 15kg/person including hand luggage.

Insurance; Before you travel make sure have an adequate travel insurance. Note that with several debit/ credit cards you travel insurance is included if you pay your trip with card. Check the conditions for your home insurance and card carefully before purchasing additional travel insurance. Africana Travel do not sell any travel insurance or cancelation insurance.

Flight check in: You can either check-in at the airport or the airlines website. Most airlines offers online check in 48h before departure. Note that not all airlines offer online check-in, therefor please look at your airline website prior to your journey. We can't check-in for you or book you a specific seats with extra legroom. Some airlines allows you to reserve specific seats with extra legroom on their website for an additional fee. This can be paid online by credit or debit card.

Terms of Purchasing; Trips booked with us are covered by general and special conditions. When purchasing a trip from Africana Travel your automatically accept these. Therefore, check our terms and conditions carefully.

FAQ

We have collected frequently asked questions here.

Climate and weather

Tanzania is located close the equator and so has a very temperate climate. It is however a big country with large differences in topography and altitude resulting in greater climatic change than one might initially think. The coastal areas of Tanzania are warm all year around with temperatures varying between 25-35°C. The hottest period is from December to late February and the coolest months are June and July. March and April can also feel cooler because of the wet weather.

The main rainy season in Tanzania is between March and May when the heavy "long rains" fall. There is also a shorter rainy season around November but it is important to remember that Tanzania is a tropical country, so rain can occur at all times of the year. When rain occurs outside the rainy season, it is normally a short burst that can be quite refreshing on a hot day. Learn more about the weather and climate in Tanzania in our Safari guide Tanzania.
