Kilimanjaro under a full moon

Therefore we start an expedition along Kilimanjaro's northern circuit every month perfectly timed so that you ascend Uhuru Peak under a full moon.

Guided by Africana Travels expert guides you walk in the amazing soft light of the full moon gazing down on the clouds beneath you. When the dark night becomes day in an amazing sunset you reach Uhuru Peak, 5 895 meters above sea level.

On this expedition you start on the less visited Lemosho route on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro and then walk around Uhuru Peak on the amazing northern circuit used by almost noone. We have choosen these less traveled paths to give you a unique experience on Kilimanjaro shared with your guides, porters and the other climbers in your group and noone else. Just you and the amazing sceneries on Kilimanjaro. This expedition includes:

  • 8 days northern circuit Kilimanjaro climb. Northern circuit is the most scenic and least traveled route on the mountain. It also offers the best acclimatization and gives you the best chance to make it all the way.
  • All park fees
  • Ascent of Uhuru Peak under a full moon 
  • Kilimanjaro Expeditions in a small group with a maximum of 12 participants
  • 3 nights on Planet Lodge in Arusha including half board
  • Extra acclimatization day, guided culture walk in the villages on the foothills of Mt Meru, before the climb. This day is very valuable in case someones bags "missed the flight"

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania
You book your own flight to Tanzania. When you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport you will be met by Africana Travel staff. We drive you to your hotel and make sure you get your room(s). At night you have dinner with the rest of the group. If you arrive with an evening flight, too late for dinner, we can arrange tea/coffee and a sandwhich for you. Overnight at Planet Lodge

Day 2: Acclimatization day; Culture walk in the foothills of Mt Meru
Pick up at the hotel at 09:00 (9 am.) for a short drive out of town. In the outskirts of Arusha you get out of the car and start walking. Our walking guide walks in these villages every week and knows almost everybody by name. The walk is light allthough there are some hills and the focus is culture more than nature. You will meet people and see villages that genuinly give you and insight into life in Tanzania today. You will stop for a picnic lunch in the shade of a tree somewhere along the way. In the afternoon you drive back to your hotel. 16:30 (4:30 pm.) the head guide on your Kilimanjaro expedition will be a the hotel for orientation before the coming climb. Day 3: Kilimanjaro expedition starts; Arusha to Mti Mkubwa via Londorossi Gate
Pick up at 08:00 (8 am.). Drive to Londorossi gate on Kilimanjaro wetsren slope. At the gate the guides handle all forlmalities with park fees, weighing gear and so on while you can relax, rest and go to the bathroom. After the gate you continue by car for about 45 minutes (11 km) before the walkign starts. Today you will walk 3-4 hours light up almost all the way. You walk through rain forest that at the end of the day will start getting sparser. Late afternoon you come to Mti Mkubwa Camp. The rest of the day you can relax at camp while your chef prepares dinner.

Day 4: Mti Mkubwa to Shira One (3500 masl)
After breakfast you start walking through the rainforest that will quite soon give way to moor lands. This day is much tougher than the first day. You will gain more than 700 meters in altitude so going slow and drinking a lot is important. You will make a stop for lunch in a beautiful valley near Shira Crater at 3 050 masl. After lunch you walk passed the Shira Caldera, a plateu that few climbers see. Shira is the third (and much less known) dormant volcano that make up Kilimanjaro (Kibo and Mawenzi are the other two). This day you will have amazing views of the white peak of Kilimanjaro. In the afternoon you arrive at Shira One Camp where you will sleep tonight.

Day 5: Shira One to Moir Hut (4170 masl)
After breakfast you start walking. This day is relatively light. You start at 10:00 (10 am.) and walk for 4-5 hours up to Moir Hut in the moor lands on western Kilimanjaro. The vegetation will become more and more sparse during the day as you get higher. Arrive in the camp in the afternoon.

Day 6: Moir Hut to Pofu Camp
This day and the next are extremely important for acclimatization. You will end up at slighlty lower altitude than you started at which is very valuable for your body. The day is again relatively light. The day is up and down with a lot of downhill at the end. The vegetation will shift a little but mostly you are now in alpine desert or semi-desert.

Day 7: Pofu Camp to Third Cave Camp (3900 masl)
This day is not long but very valuable for acclimatization. After breakfast you start the walk that should not take more than 3-4 hours. You will start seeing Mawenzi Peak and during the day you cross Rongai Route that starts on the northern side of Kilimanjaro near Kenya. You arrive at your camp in time for lunch. Spend the afternoon resting or take a walk in the surroundings with your guide.

Dag 9 (10/2 2017): Third Cave Camp till School Hut Camp (4 720 möh.)
Efter frukost lämnar ni Third Cave och vandarr uppåt mot ökenlandskapet i ”The Saddle” mellan Mawenzi och Kibo, Kilimanjaros två toppar. Efter en ganska tuff vandring når ni School Hut Camp (4,720 meter över havet) vid foten av Kibo Crater tidig eftermiddag. Resten av dagen ägnas åt vila inför den slutliga bestigningen.Frukost, lunch och middag, inklusive dryck, ingår.

Dag 10 (11/2 2017): Toppbestigning, mot Uhuru Peak (5 895 möh.) 
Mitt i natten väcker er guide er för att börja vandringen uppåt mot Uhuru Peak. Detta är en lång och mycket tuff dag men när ni står på toppen av Afrika och ser soluppgången kommer det att vara all möda värt. Denna dag är det viktigt att vara riktigt varmt klädd. När klättringen börjar mitt i natten kommer det att vara mycket kallt. Ni vandrar i skenet av månen och era pannlampor. Vandringen nerför är den jobbigaste och oftast det man är minst förberedd på. All fokus är på att nå toppen och det kan vara lätt att glömma att man ska ner också. Ni går ner i etapper, först ner till Millenium Camp för lunch och vila och därefter längs med Mweka rutten (som används för nedstigning) till Mweka Camp. Ni stannar med jämna mellanrum för att vila trötta ben. Frukost, lunch och middag, inklusive dryck, ingår.

Dag 11 (12/2 2017): Mweka Hut till Mweka Gate och sedan tillbaka till Arusha 
Denna dag tar ni er snabbt nerför berget genom regnskogen till Mweka Gate. Här blir ni hämtade och kör till ert hotell i Arusha. Boende på Planet Lodge. Frukost, lunch och middag ingår. Kostnad för dryck till middagen tillkommer.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania 
Pick up at airport. Transfer to hotel in Arusha. Dinner at night.

Day 2: Acclimatization day; culture walk in the foothills of Mount Meru
Guided walk through the villages on the foothills of Tanzanias second highest mountain; Mount Meru. In the afternoon orientation by your Kilimanjaro guide. Dinner at the hotel at night.

Day 3: Kilimanjaro climb starts, Arusha to Mti Mkubwa (2780 masl) via Londorossi gate

Day 4: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 (3 500 masl) 


Day 5: Shira 1 to Moir Hut (4 170 masl)

Day 6: Moir Hut to Pofu Camp (4 020 masl) 

Day 7: Pofu Camp to Third Cave Camp (3 900 masl)

Day 8: Third Cave Camp to School Hut Camp (4 720 masl)

Day 9: Summit attempt 
Walk to Uhuru Peak (5 895 masl) in the light of the full moon. After you have ascended the peak you descend via Mweka route to Mweka Camp (3 790 masl)

Day 10: Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate and then Arusha 
Back in the hotel you have dinner with the group and your guide celebrating a succesful expedition. 

Day 11: Going home
3 hours before your flight departs we pick you at the hotel and drive you to Kilimanjaro Airport
